The renovation and expansion of the hospital were carried out in several phases from 2007 to 2011. Two levels expansions were done on two facades of the building. In addition, major renovations on the existing corresponding levels of the hospital were performed. A new mechanical penthouse was added to the 4th floor roof to install the majority of systems that serve the expansion. A geothermal system including 72 wells serving a Multistack heat pump chiller system. This is also the first hospital in Canada with a geothermal well heating and cooling system. The hospital remained in service for the duration of the work except for some planned interruptions to the emergency ward. Two new operating rooms with associated services and a new laboratory have been constructed in this project.
